KH, pH, and CO2: The Reef Keeper's Stability Triangle

Carbonate hardness (KH), pH, and dissolved CO2 are not three independent numbers on a test kit — they are three views of the same chemical equilibrium. Understanding how they interact is what separates reactive dosing from genuine stability.

The Carbonate Buffer System

KH measures the concentration of carbonate and bicarbonate ions in your water, which act as a buffer against sudden pH swings. A higher KH gives your tank more "resistance" to acid produced by biological processes like respiration and nitrification. This is why a reef tank with KH crashing from 8 to 5 dKH over a week will often show pH swinging more wildly overnight, even if nothing else in the tank changed — the buffer capacity that was keeping pH steady has been consumed.

Why Chasing pH Directly Backfires

It is tempting to dose a pH-up product when a test reads low, but pH is a downstream symptom, not the root cause. If KH is depleted, dosing to raise pH temporarily masks the problem while the underlying buffer capacity — and your corals' ability to build skeleton — remains compromised. Stabilize KH first with a two-part or all-in-one alkalinity supplement dosed on a consistent schedule, and pH typically follows into a healthy, stable range on its own.

The Overlooked Third Leg: CO2

Atmospheric and biological CO2 dissolves into tank water to form carbonic acid, which is why pH naturally dips overnight (when photosynthesis stops and respiration dominates) and rises during the day. A poorly ventilated fish room or a sump lid sealed too tightly can trap CO2 and depress pH regardless of how much KH you dose. If your pH consistently reads low despite stable, correctly-dosed alkalinity, check ventilation and gas exchange before reaching for another bottle.

A Practical Testing Rhythm

Test KH twice a week at first, at the same time of day, and log the numbers rather than reacting to a single reading. Once your dosing regimen holds KH within about 0.5 dKH of your target for two to three consecutive weeks, you can safely drop to weekly testing. Stability, not a specific number, is the actual goal.
